The Immortal – Life-support machines have solved the death issue : the human body

Revital Cohen had a strange "bigger than life" idea. And we love this kind of idea. Thinking about life-support machines, he reckoned that the only thing that failed about immortality was the human part of the death issue. So, he decided to avoid it and withdrew the human part to get a circuit made of life-support machines only. And guess what, the life-support machines working on their own are immortal !

More deeply, this installation deals with the issue of technology inside our bodies, and of our dependence on it. It is made of a heart-lung machine, a dialysis machine, an infant incubator, a mechanical mentilator and an intraoperative cell salvage machine to keep each other alive thanks to electrical impulses, oxygen and artificial blood.

The Immortal will be part of Superhuman, an exhibition exploring human enhancement that will open at the Wellcome Collection in London on July 19 and run through October 16, 2012.
