Festivals at the heart of digital creation

For the sixth edition of this guide, we have chosen to feature on the front cover an enigmatic character encountered from festival to festival, riding his fluorescent scooter through the night. Who is this Blue Rider? Where does he come from? Where is he going? We met him at Elektra in Montreal and Mapping in Geneva. He leaves a luminous, poetic trail behind as an invitation for discovery.

What if digital arts reinvented the city? This question is the guiding thread of the new Bains Numériques festival spanning through the city of Enghien. Each festival is an opportunity to re-enchant the public space, offering creative wanderings through installations, exhibitions, performances... at the level of a city, a neighbourhood or a village.

Once again this guide provides an international overview of digital festivals that reflects their dynamism and diversity. Despite a particularly difficult economic context, festival directors continue to commit themselves alongside artists. They are often the only ones to support digital cultures and make them accessible to a broad audience, as the digital art market is just emerging and these works are still scarcely displayed in museums or purchased by institutions. New collaborations are being set up between different venues or festivals to co-produce or co-diffuse these art-forms and so we would like to greet these initiatives. Networks are being built such as RAN (digital arts network) or the European Lab for festivals, part of the Nuits Sonores in Lyon. A European programme will also enable the Panorama 14 exhibition, le Fresnoy's annual event dedicated to creation, to travel to Belgium, Lithuania and Spain. We have chosen to focus on (A/V) audiovisual festivals through several reports overviewing new trends* such as Live Cinema, Live A/V, Mapping, as much as new writing, experimental short films, animated films, webdocs…

There again, festivals are essential distribution channels for these new formats. Electronic music, digital arts, digital cultures, please follow the guide…

* Live A/V, special issue of MCD # 04: we previously published a thematic issue comprising 52 portraits of international artists from the Live A/V scene, available in digital format on www.digitalmcd.com
