As every year, the visitor is provided with a large selection of installations. A few examples:
- Mobility from Otto Bock
100 handheld mirors are moving. The 100 lights reflected from the mirrors dance on the opposite wall to build at the end a Chinese character.
- The particle
This large sculpure of moving LED circles creating light spheres and sound, reflect the beginning of life on earth, a mixture...
Ars Electronica is this year more centered around the Ars Electronica center itself. Wednesday's evening concert took place on the main deck there with the great Gameboy Music Club, the impressive Tesla Orchestra and Michael Mayr & Kid Soylent.
Last year Ars Electronica benefited from the huge Tabakfabrick space no longer available this year for the festival unfortunately. Too bad because it was a fantastic place to showcase major digital artworks. But fortunately, there ar...
Leaving tomorrow for Linz, Austria, for the Ars Electronica festival. This year’s theme, Origin – How It All Begins, is organized in cooperation with CERN, the Geneva based institution with more than 8,000 scientists exploring, among other research, the origin of our universe.
It is also a statement of Ars Electronica in favor of the importance of advanced basic research in our world highlighting efficiency and quick return on investment..
Always impressive to...
Leaving this Thrusday for SXSW (South by South West) in Austin, Texas, of all places. My first time there. Glad to discover Austin and SXSW. Digitalarti even organized a partnership with SXSW. The festival is so huge, there must be more than 1.000 conferences, workshops... There are 3 parts: Music, Film & Interactive. I will be there from the 11th to the 15th mostly for the Interactive part. The music side of the festival starts after with more than 1.500 bands coming to town!! To give you...
Soo much to see, hear, exchange, discover… at this year's Ars Electronica festival. What remains afterward? The sheer size of the location was a much discussed topic among visitors. Impressive? Too much? Great? Not enough budget to properly use the whole space? Too much cardboard? Fantastic space to showcase some great works? Too much space to showcase sometime basic work? Great meeting place? Too large to meet people? A bit of everything depending on who you talk to or on anyone's p...
Ars Electronica organized an Open Source Symposium during the festival ending by this conference: Repair Society (and yourself). Moderated by Andreas Hirsch, the conference included Saskia Sassen on the digital training of the powerless ( with interesting parallels between2 opposite worlds: the finance industry and the powerless), Derrick de Kekhove on open source life and Jiochi Ito on the new meaning of life and the necessary changes among the world elites. Saskia Sassen Jiochi Ito ...
As every year, a large public event is organized during the Ars Electronica festival along the Danube. This year's theme was BABY JET, the railroad of the future. The fantasized project, from artist Lawine Torren, is to create an underground, more than 1.000 km per hour, bullet train. View from the Ars Electronica Center from the other side of the Danube among the BABY JET show crowd. The crowd arriving along the river. The BABY JET project succeeded. The show ending with fireworks mix...

Ars Electronica changes each year to invest other parts of the city of Linz in Austria in addition to their beautiful Ars Electronica Center along the Danube. This year, the festival benefits from a huge empty industrial complex: the Tabakfabrik. A large set of half a dozen buildings, all together around 80.000 m2 (ie around 860.000 square feet) detailed in the enclosed map. In this space, the digital artworks breathe in an unusual way. Several pieces have more than 500 m2 (ie more than 5300 s...

You enter a round room surrounded by plastic walls, you sit in the middle and press"start". Suddenly you are in the eye of a storm of styrofoams beads. Quite fascinating. In the center of this "meditation machine" everything is calm and safe but you are surrounded by thousands of small flying objects creating waterfall or desert storms like sounds, moving visual patterns... with the wind. The artist comment on his work reflects the current habit of order, org...
At the Arts Electronica center, the Fablab explores design with the new generation of 3Dprinters.The printer: The material used by this printer: plastic wires of various colors. No this camcorder does not work it was printed on a 3D printer but is only a prototype. Those 2 functional large clocks were entirely produced on a 3D printer by the MIT labs. All this shows the start of an entirely new field as also presented during the Lift France conference in Marseille l...
The Art Electronica center is itself a digital artwork! At night, the building is offered as a display window to artists, DJ... to create new experiences with light, sound... Is it "building art"? :) ...
"Bare" is a new type of ink that allows the part of the body painted with it to connect to various devices... It is a skin safe conductive ink. And water washable.
As those images show, I tested it and it works. Congratulation to Bibi Nelson (UK), Isabel Lizardi (US), Matt Johnson (US) and Becky Pilditch (UK).
Now the project is quite new and it shows. A brilliant idea with too little applications and thoughts on future usages at this time. Looking forward to follow up on t...
This year at Ars Electronica we explore the human body inside out. On the left is the picture of my retina ! Thanks to the New Views of Humankind - Biomechanical functionality of the Eye by Michael Buchberger, Austria at the Arts Elctronica center. One artist, Eduardo Kac, created a mixed specie DNA He extracted a gene of his own DNA and used it to replace its counterpart inside the DNA of a petunia. Why ??? As he answered: artists are using the medias of their times. &nbs...
