Expanded Cinema: Live video/music performance

Angie Eng is a multimedia artist who works in video, installation and time-based performance since 1994. Starting out in New York working with tube cameras, wireless macro cameras, The Fairlight, cheap video mixers and analogue cinema tricks with puppetry, Eng is best known for her live video performances. She now mixes analogue with digital in her collaborations: with Rhys Chatham (Echodes), with Pascal Battus (Tremorrag), and with Sofi Hemon (Lumiaks). She lives/works between Paris and New York City.

The New York Electronic Art Festival closes October 9th at Roulette with Liminal, a multimedia concert that revives the cinepoem by combining traditional and contemporary electronic instruments directed by multimedia artist, Angie Eng. Joining her are: video artist and long time supporter of experimental video and music, Nancy Meli Walker, percussionist and electronics, Satoshi Takeishi, cellist and electronics, Audrey Chen and pianist, Shoko Nagai. Liminal is a series of live video/music pieces based upon the liminal phase of rituals. Symbols borrowed from Kabbalah magic, cult horror films, as well as footage she shot while spending time with primitive tribes are weaved into her moving images.

Eng will introduce her new instrument the VideoBass invented by swiss engineer/artist Michael Egger. The VideoBass is an unique hardware/software-combination for controlling live-visuals. An artist talk with the director and VideoBass inventor will take place the following day at Harvestworks, October 10th at 7pm.

Harvestworks Digital Media Arts Center announces the 2011 New York Electronic Art Festival on Governors Island in collaboration with River to River Festival, Trinity Wall Street, the Governors Island National Monument, Roulette and other partners. The festival is a summer series of concerts, workshops, and exhibitions centered on the cutting-edge work being done at the intersection of art and technology.

About Roulette

Roulette is a major New York City venue for contemporary music and intermedia art, internationally recognized for the presentation and promotion of experimental contemporary music, an incubator for young talent and a laboratory where new ideas and new technologies are examined, appraised and developed. It is also an artists’ resource center, offering cheap rehearsal space, high quality recording facilities, information and commissions. They recently relocated to Brooklyn with their grand opening in September 2011.
