ITW of FRANK BRETSCHNEIDER in A/V MCD special issue

Extract of FRANK BRETSCHNEIDER's interview in LIVE A/V, MCD special issue.
Can you tell us about your background, your influences and artistic references?
Since I never had a musical training or education, I started quite late making music by myself. Instead I studied fine arts and I worked for a long time as a graphic designer. Around 1983, I had my first experiences in making music, working with tape machines and loops.
In 1984, I launched a (tape)cassette label to publish my music. From 1986 - 1991, I had a band called AG Geige, kind of experimental pop band. At the same time, I started to experiment with 8 and 16mm film and later video to extend the appearance of the band. In 1988, I bought my first computer to explore the possibilites of computermusic. In 1996,
I was co-found of raster-noton. Since 1998, I´m a freelance musician. I was
impressed from electronic music already as a boy, listening to the electronic soundscapes of sci-fi movies. Later a lot of popular, mainly black music and the modern contemporary music of the 20th century.
How would you describe the video/audio dimension of your work? How do you go about composing and diffusing your work? Do you consider audio/video performances to be a (new) artistic discipline in their own right?
I see myself primarily as musician. But I always had an interest in the interchange between visual art and music. So, I understand my video work as a kind of extension of my music. And it´s great for performing live to build up a second level of perception. But I don´t want to illustrate or telling stories, I just try to make music visible. In a way like the different parameters of a music piece on a computer screen: flashing and
moving bands, bars, dots, lines, numbers. On the other hand, the visual aspect influences the music: the way of playing, constructing, composing and listening, the perception of time, etc.
