MCD new issue : Internet of things

We are all (more or less) intelligent objects. We are already immersed in the Internet of Things (IoT) without even knowing it : microchipped pets, trackable consumer products, biometric passports and geolocation tools all point to a world where real and virtual are already intricately intertwined. Some 35 billion intelligent objects already surround us, for better or for worse. MCD magazine invited Poptronics, the digital media of electronic cultures, to penetrate this vast nebula, and to realise a special issue.
(editor in chief : Annick Rivoire, founder of Poptronics).

This special issue (116 pages, French/English) on newsstands this week and available online
(order : digitalmcd.com) questions uses of IoT. Consumer markets and institutions aren’t the
only ones actively investing in ubiquitous computing – artists, media theorists and activists
are also imagining a different Internet of Things. Poptronics tried to editorially emanate the
«cracker» spirit that roams from North to South as it fashions an alternative community to the society of surveillance.

Look for interviews with Bruce Sterling, Rob Van Kranenburg, Daniel Kaplan, Jean-Louis Fréchin and for original texts by Gérald Santucci, David Guez, Nicolas Frespech. Discover features about Fablabs (are they the factory of the future ?), IoT and southern countries (is it a chance for them ?) or surveillance stakes (your ear tags aren’t they ringing ?) Don’t miss the artistic points of view from architects, designers, performers or code-it-yourself artists such as Philipp Beesley, Meghan Trainor, Nicolas Frespech, Albertine Meunier, Olga Kisseleva, Jodi, Stanza (…). Plus discover an original fiction by French SF author Francis Mizio.
BUY the special issue here.

An event to launch this IoT special issue will take place at La Cantine (passage des
Panoramas, 75002) on February 17th, up to 6.30 pm, with authors, artists and contributors.
