mediars's blog

The Centro Sperimentale MEDIARS is a non-profit cultural association that fosters mobility, research, education and production working with a multidisciplinary process on art, culture and technology. The center, funded in 2006 with a public start-up grant from the Regione Lazio, runs its activities between the castle of Contigliano, in Rieti and Los Angeles. Over the years MEDIARS built an international network that includes universities, companies, individuals and the local municipality. Mediars main goal is to create innovation and increase the capabilities for action of small and medium sized towns within the internationalization of their relations context. Collaborating with private and public entities, MEDIARS uses the new media as a glue for the different disciplines and fields represented by the members involved in each project, either educational or artistic, our goal is always to work across cultural differences and identities. In collaboration with the local municipality MEDIARS runs a yearly workshop on "Interactive Media and Culture" in the Castle of Contigliano, one outside of Rome.

The participant artists:

We arrived to the Mediars workshop for a two week course. Three of us come from California, and one from Verona. None of us had met before. Nor had we met Alessandro Marianantoni prior to the workshop, but were attracted by his reputation in the area of interactive media and the prospect of studying new technologies in the ancient setting of Contigliano Italy.

Anne Herlihy is an artist from Santa Monica California who learned about the program through involvement in an upcoming exhibition in Santa Monica called GLOW 2010 for which she will be creating an interactive installation. New to interactive artwork, she welcomed the chance to learn from Alessandro, and the many experienced lecturers presenting at the workshop.

Daniel Lint arrived from San Francisco, a recent graduate in communication design with an option in media arts and a minor in broadcasting. The Mediars program was recommended by Chiara Ferrari, a media arts professor at California State University at Chico. Daniel will take this opportunity to travel through Italy before returning to the United States to begin his career.

Paola Mileto traveled to Contigliano from her home in Verona. Her field of interest began with Artificial Intelligence and grew to encompass networking and multimedia technology. As a computer scientist, Paola looked forward to exploring new ways to utilize this technology in an expressive and artistic way.

Yoshie Sakai is a multi media artist from Los Angeles who was encouraged to enroll in the Mediars program by Anne Bray, executive director of Freewaves, a non profit organization that promotes the work of new media artists. Yoshie enrolled in the course to learn more about interactive technology and its possibilities for her fine art practice.

In the course of this program we were exposed to the culture, warmth and generous intelligence of Alessandro, his visiting lecturers and the many people we met in Rieti and Contigliano. For this, and our new friendships, we are very grateful.

About the installation we created during this program:

We see our emotions echoed in nature, and imagine that nature may be sensitive to our existence. Throughout history, in myth and literature, this reflection has been a source of artistic inspiration.

As visiting artists we were struck in particular by the significance of water to the cultural history of Rieti province. In our exploration, we encountered water in all of its many guises. Our installation transcends our cultural differences by demonstrating that each of us can find our moods mirrored in the many sounds and images of water’s expression.

The workshop provides conceptual background and technical skills to develop interactive installations for arts, museums, facade projections and cultural exhibits. Previous works will provide examples on how to merge innovative interactive technology with history and culture.

It is a 2-week full-time course on visual arts, media theory and technology in their relation to the place. The workshop is designed for students, scholars and artists from architecture, design, media arts and science fields. Classes are in English with a high quality tutoring, they are thought for the students to produce at the end of the training, an interactive multimedia art work that will be exhibited in the Rieti Sotterranea.

The theme of this year was the water and its relationship with the technique, the power and the place.
