[The User] is a contemporary art collective comprised of architect and installation artist Thomas McIntosh, and composer and sound artist Emmanuel Madan. The duo’s collaborative projects re-imagine relationships between technological systems, culture and human experience in striking ways.

Coincidence Engine Three

Composition/Installation for modified metronomes, custom electronics and software

With Coincidence Engine Three, [The User] applies the themes explored in the first two Coincidence Engines to metronomes of the type used in Ligeti’s 1962 composition. The installation space contains an ensemble of modified mechanical metronomes. Each metronome is perpetually ticking, contributing to a rhythmic or textural sonic landscape which fills the room. Upon closer investigation of the metronomes, it becomes clear to the visitor that the adjustable weight, whose position on the pendulum rod determines the speed of the metronome’s pulse, is moving up and down that rod, seemingly of its own accord. Automated variations in the tempos of each metronome cause the resultant rhythmic environment to modulate.
