Eli Commins's blog

Since his beginnings as a playwright, Eli Commins has explored the relation between the temporality of text and that of live performance. His first plays (Pas de plus tard, Les fragiles, Prendre et laisser), are early attempts to bring the printed text closer to the realm of the stage. After 2007, Commins turns to digital writing in order to invent textual forms that are capable of adapting in real-time to what is happening in the performance. In 2008, 120 Times becomes his first foray into the creation of an open-ended, non-linear text. In 2008, he works with Eric Joris and the Flemish group CREW, to create EUX, and then Line-Up, immersive performances in which the spectator is at the center of a powerful sensory experience, where identity and memory are literally transferred from the characters to the "immersant". Since 2009, Commins has been developing Breaking, a series of live performances that integrate real-time messages delivered through social media, on such themes as the Iranian uprisings, the Devil's Highway in Arizona, or the Haitian earthquake In each case, the spectators follow real people who are involved in current events. Commins is currently working on a new performance, Writing Spaces.
