/ I'm Olivier Forest. I studied at the Cergy (France) Fine
Arts School, and then at Fresnoy (France). Since 2007,
I've been organizing the Filmer la Musique (Filming
Music) festival with Éric Daviron and Marilyn Lours.
The idea was to assemble all sorts of musical images,
including of course those that had, until that point, only
been present on the web. In fact we've created a space
dedicated to showing these creations: the Mirror Ball
Cinema.
I'm also working on the Non Stop Music Planet project
(Point Éphémère, Paris, 30-31 May <www.nonstopmusicplanet.com>).
It's a 24 hour film, edited live from
streamed performances worldwide, synchronized to the
revolution of night-time time zones around the planet.
// I haven't been interested in the net for very long.
I found the web frustrating, at first. It was a strange
animal, too slow, and it drove me mad with the waiting.
You could see this geek joke going around: World Wide
Wait… which is exactly how I felt while I listened to the
crackling of my be-damned modem!
I've been interested in the net since it’s become democratic,
like a Dionysian mass: lack of talent and competence is no
longer an obstacle to self expression. New, unexpected
forms of expression, from the basest to the most poetic,
have emerged, forms which previously hadn't been
recognized as being legitimate. What I like is that
everyone can feed into it all the time, that it's become a
sort of mirror image of human thought and passion, an
outdoor subconscious, a huge, crazy, perpetually growing
and moving, party of the human soul.
And, of course, sex--tits and ass--is fundamentally important
on the web. You use the Internet to jack off, figuratively,
and in reality.
/// The idea of the net, such as it has been taking shape,
brings to mind the idea of a montage: connecting flows,
linking spaces, time zones, triggering meaning or chaos
by connecting different components online.
You can also make films, like for example The Transmigration
Of Donovan Lynch, by Thomas Cazals, which you can
show at Filmer la Musique. Created entirely from videos
picked up from Youtube, it brings together just about all
the different types of components: cell phone images,
online artists' videos, advertisements, fans doing covers of
songs… to create a sort of science fiction film noir.
I find the feeling of simultaneity you get from the Internet
fascinating: feeling something that is permanently active,
in parallel… It's also the idea of my Non Stop Music
Planet project: to follow, through webcams, streamed
television, and musical performances, the revolving night
on the planet's surface… as soon as night descends,
the music comes out… There's something cosmic about
that movement.
//// The web will be an exciting territory to explore, but it
will be exciting for different reasons. It will become
"geological," with different strata: you'll find photos of
naked women, blogs, personal pages whose authors will
have been long gone. There might be guys who specialize
in exploring the Internet's buried layers. Which would
make for a good William Gibson dark techno novel.
I like imagining a character that would be a kind of web
archeologist, a private detective riding on obsolete navigators,
searching for old pictures of porn, or traces of forgotten
parties and events that people are getting excited about at
the moment. Like a fresco on a temple or a pyramid.
It's like the writing of our civilization, an archive. Unless a Big
Bug, a Grand Flash or a Big Blank were to wipe all the
data away…
Perhaps the final outcome of all of this is the complete
integration of the net into physical space--something
insect-like, a kind of swarming that would keep us permanently
connected to the vibrations of the species.
Which is why Twitter is so interesting.

/ Je suis Olivier Forest. J'ai étudié à l'Ecole
d'Arts de Cergy, puis au Fresnoy.
Depuis 2007, j'organise avec Éric Daviron
et Marilyn Lours le festival Filmer la
Musique. L'idée était de réunir toutes les
formes d'images musicales, donc évidemment
celles qui n'existaient jusque-là que
sur le web. On a d’ailleurs développé un
espace dédié pour diffuser ces productions :
le Mirror Ball Cinema.
Je travaille aussi sur le projet Non Stop Music
Planet (Point Éphémère, Paris, les 30/31 mai
<www. nonstopmusicplanet.com>,
développé avec MU). C’est un film de 24 h
monté en direct à partir de streaming de
performances musicales, qui suit les fuseaux
horaires et la progression de la nuit à la
surface de la terre.
// Je ne m'intéresse pas au réseau depuis
si longtemps. Au début le web me frustrait.
C’était pour moi une bête curieuse,
trop lente, ça me rendait fou d'attendre.
On voyait passer cette blague de geek:
World Wide Wait… c'est exactement ce
que je ressentais en entendant grésiller
mon infernal modem !
Le réseau m’intéresse depuis qu’il s’est
démocratisé, qu’il est devenu cette masse
dionysiaque : l’absence de talent et de
compétence n’est plus un obstacle à
l’expression. On a vu surgir des formes
étonnantes qui n’avaient pas vraiment
droit de cité avant, des plus crasses aux
plus poétiques. J'aime beaucoup que tout
le monde puisse l'alimenter en permanence,
qu'il devienne une sorte de double de la
pensée et des pulsions humaines,
d'inconscient à ciel ouvert, de grande fête
démente de l'esprit humain en perpétuelle
croissance et en perpétuel mouvement.
Et forcément, le sexe, le cul, ont une
importance fondamentale sur le web.
Internet, ça sert beaucoup à se branler,
au propre comme au figuré.
/// L’idée de réseau, telle qu’elle se développe,
induit pour moi une notion de
montage : connecter les flux, relier les
espaces, les fuseaux horaires, déclencher
du sens ou du chaos en reliant entre eux
les éléments en ligne.
on peut aussi faire des films comme par
exemple, The Transmigration of Of Donovan
Lynch de Thomas Cazals que l'on va
projeter à Filmer la Musique.
Réalisé entièrement à partir de clips
récupérés sur Youtube et sur le web, il en
intègre à peu près tous les éléments :
images de téléphone portable, clips mis en
ligne par les artistes, promotion, reprises
de chansons par des fans… pour en faire
une sorte de polar de science-fiction.
Le sentiment de simultanéité qu’engendre
Internet me passionne : sentir quelque
chose qui est actif en permanence et en
parallèle… C’est aussi l’idée de mon
projet Non Stop Music Planet : suivre via
des Webcams, des télés en streaming,
des performances live la progression de
la nuit à la surface de la terre. Dès que le
nuit apparaît, la musique surgit…
Il y a quelque chose de cosmique dans ce
mouvement.
//// Le web sera un territoire passionnant
à explorer, mais son intérêt changera de
nature. Il aura acquis une forme "géologique",
des strates : on retrouvera des
photos de filles nues, des blogs, des pages
personnelles dont les auteurs auront
disparu depuis longtemps. Peut-être qu'il
y aura des types qui se spécialiseront dans
l'exploration des couches enfouies d'Internet.
Ça ferait un bon polar techno à la William
Gibson.
J'aime bien imaginer un personnage qui
sera comme un archéologue du web, un
détective privé qui partira à bord de
navigateurs désuets à la découverte de
vieilles photos pornos, de traces de soirées
et d’évènements oubliés qui passionnaient
les gens sur le moment. Comme une
fresque sur un temple ou une pyramide.
C'est une sorte d'écriture et d'archive
de notre civilisation. Sauf si un Big Bug,
un Grand Flash ou un Big Blank effaçait
toutes les données …
Peut-être que la finalité de tout ça c’est
l’intégration totale du réseau dans le
domaine physique – quelque chose
d’insectoïde, un fourmillement qui nous
connecterait tout le temps aux vibrations
de l’espèce. Twitter c’est intéressant
pour ça justement.
