 / I’m a computer engineer by training, but I fell into the “cultural” sector very early on… at first I was refractory to machines until I understood how to design them, to hack them, just as they’re designing us… Until the moment I understood that you could “write the message of the medium.” I discovered the web in the summer of ‘94, during training, then I discovered the Friche (Marseilles) and the Internautes Associé (Web Surfers Associated) and their cyb.extami.net in April of ‘95. From ‘97 on, everything picked up speed: Multimedia Culture at the Friche, the Internet café at the Rencontre des Cultures Urbaines (Urban Cultural Encounters) at the Halle de la Villette in ’97 (Paris), opening the the Cyber in ’98, the first multimedia concept designers/trainers, the young, the curious, hungry for the web and for new images, the new connections. There were experiments with artists, like the Multimedia Haïkus at the Fourneau Collective 12, Cultures Communes during the Controverses d’Avignon, with designers and trainers, residency programs in Alexandria, televisions in the trees with the Komplex Kaphanrnaum, Or Not Toupie and Nicolas Clauss, apprenticeships at Les Instants Video, Second Nature (festival), the Portail des Savoirs, and the Hublot (in the south of France)… Mixing things. Digitally. Running around Provence, crossing the Mediterranean. Mobile objects. Creating. Contemporary pieces. Over ten years, ZINC is a team of 9 people. Workshops, encounters, art pieces, projects, networks. Exploring and doing. And still the urge to take part in writing the message of the medium.

// From one mad adventure… to another, more conventional, mad adventure… Feeling today as if being an adult is a bit still. A kind of abundance that’s no longer unchecked
and crazy… A spider’s web you can really get stuck in… At the same time it’s an abundance that’s like human magma made up of creativity and desire. Some “thing”
extraordinary… Something that’s gone from being an artist’s utopia to a craftsman’s utopia. From artists to authors. A giant DIY. Maybe that’s what ownership is, a message
that’s being written.

/// The idea of a network is like a grammar for apprehending the necessary shift from totality to complexity,a grammar for imagining and accomplishing horizontality, conceiving and building the long tail. A grammar, as Ken MacKenzie Wark writes, for the
development of the “hacker class.” A grammar to “remake sociology and re-imagine society,” as Bruno Latour suggests. Essential as a model for “getting along.” A foundation for relating to others, to the world. A fundamental part of the means of production,
of work.

//// The convergence of media and writing, the convergence and popularization of reception production equipment, and the horizontalization of positions is going to keep on generating this big mess. Art will necessarily come out of this, to determine
representations, to create messages. Perhaps quite simply in the classic sense of artists,
pieces, audience… but still being artists, pieces. But incorporating the audience, us, the people. The giant DIY. The role of art and culture in our societies won’t change. They’re intangible “signs”. It’s the way in which they’re going to happen and be
made which will change. Horizontality and complexity. “No-one is as smart as everybody” Kevin Kelly. Yet:,Hypertext has not been sufficiently well explored. Facebook may be the tool and the message of social hypertext that can allow us to write “as we may think.” Virtuality also has yet to become like in the Neuromancer. We should read and reread the predictions of John Brunner, Philip K. Dick, William Gibson, Bruce Sterling, Maurice G. Dantec and Richard Morgan in order to imagine: Free cultures, like insemination and life forms. Generate circulation, dissemination, pollination without industrial control, but under our own un-control. And imagine another frontier after wifi and Internet everywhere: interface everywhere. A click and m web navigator is on my wall, my window, my table, my hand. Interface accessible everywhere and all the time…

/ Je suis ingénieur informaticien de formation tombé très tôt dans le "culturel"… et au début réfractaire aux machines; jusqu’au moment de comprendre la manière de les "designer", de les "hacker", en même temps qu’elles nous désignent… Jusqu’au moment de comprendre que l’on peut écrire le message du médium. J’ai fait la rencontre avec le web à l’été 94, pendant un stage, puis de la Friche, des Internautes Associés et leur cyb.extami.net en avril 95. Dès 97 cela s’est enchaîné : Culture Multimédia à la Friche, le cyber des Rencontres de Cultures urbaines dans la Grande Halle de la Villette en 97, l’ouverture du Cyber en 98, les premiers animateurs-concepteurs multimédia, des jeunes, des gens curieux,
avides de web et de nouvelles images, de nouvelles connexions. Des expériences avec des artistes, les Haïkus Multimédia avec le Fourneau, Le Collectif 12, Cultures Communes pendant les Controverses d’Avignon, des concepteurs et des animateurs, des résidences à Alexandrie, des télévisions dans les arbres avec Komplex Kapharnaum, Or Not Toupie de Nicolas Clauss, des compagnonnages avec les Instants Vidéos, Seconde Nature, le Portail des Savoirs, le Hublot… Mixer les choses. Numérique. Parcourir la Provence, traverser la Méditerranée. Objets mobiles. Créer. OEuvres contemporaines. En 10 ans, ZINC c’est une équipe de 9 personnes. Des ateliers, des rencontres, des oeuvres, des projets, des réseaux. Pour faire et explorer. Et toujours cette envie de participer à écrire le message du médium

// D’une folle aventure à… une autre folle aventure, mais plus convenue … Aujourd’hui, le sentiment d’un âge adulte un peu consensuel. Une forme d’abondance qui n’est plus débridée et effrénée… Comme une véritable toile d’araignée dans laquelle on peut s’engluer… Et en même temps, cette abondance comme une forme de magma humain fait d’envie, d’invention. Un "machin" qui est extraordinaire… Quelque chose qui serait
passé d’une utopie artistique à une utopie artisanale. D’artistes à des auteurs. Un DIY géant. Peut-être c’est cela l’appropriation, le message en train de s’écrire.

/// La notion de réseau est une grammaire pour aborder le changement à opérer, de la totalité à la complexité. Une grammaire pour penser et faire l’horizontalité, concevoir et construire la longue traîne. Une grammaire, comme l’écrit Ken MacKenzie Wark, pour développer une "classe hacker". Une grammaire pour "refaire de la sociologie et repenser la société", comme le propose Bruno Latour. Essentielle comme modèle pour "faire avec". Un fondement des relations aux autres, au monde. Un fondamental des modalités de production, de travail.

continuer à générer un "bordel ambiant". Forcément, de la création va sortir de cela,
pour poser des représentations, construire des messages… Le DIY géant. L’art et la culture ne changeront pas de fonctions dans nos sociétés. Ce sont des "signes" intangibles. C’est la manière dont elles vont se faire et se créer qui changeront. Horizontalité et complexité. No-one is as smart than everybody,

Par contre :
L’Hypertexte n’a pas été suffisamment exploré. Facebook est peut-être l’outil et le
message d’un hypertexte social qui nous permettra d’écrire "as we may think". Le virtuel non plus n’est pas encore comme dans le Neuromancien. Il nous faut lire et relire les prévisions de John Brunner, Philip K Dick, William Gibson, Bruce Sterling, Maurice G. Dantec ou Richard Morgan pour envisager les cultures libres, comme les semences et le
vivant. Générer des circulations, de diffusion, des pollinisations sans le contrôle
des industries, mais sous notre incontrôle. Imaginer aussi une autre frontière, après
le wifi de l’Internet everywhere : l’interface partout. Un clic et j’ai mon navigateur
web sur le mur, la vitre, ma table, ma main. L’interface accessible partout et tout le
temps …
