/ I’m an average surfing Joe, and the web gave this amateur
everything he’s got : work and a network. I started to get
interested in net based art, then I gave it a try myself.
Technology kills instincts, it freezes emotions instantly in
an electronic haze. There’s nothing human about it; it’s
nothing but code, and digital madmen busy challenging
their limits. In this tumultuous tide, I’ve always carefully
avoided the “artist” label, so I’d rather put my personal
background under the sign of the amateur; the passionate
artist that nobody notices.
// At least at the beginning, before the downpour, the net
was a space of creative freedom, not for the few, but for
the many. The net is a continuously pulsating mutation.
I was at first surprised to see that, artistically speaking,
everything is in inverse proportion to what it appears to be:
what’s shown is almost unbearable, while what’s most
powerful is hardly visible or comprehensible at all.
It’s hard because you need technical training to understand
the stakes involved in the specialized and difficult to
grasp forms that network art takes.
What’s unbearable, on the net, is fine art.
Let’s summarize: there was a minority that challenged the
limits, today there are tera units worth of digital artists
who spam their panoramically multiplying patronizing
ejaculation all over the social networks of web TWO
point ZERO. We’ve entered the white noise, the electronic
snow, and now the dust is just going to have to settle.
I want you to understand: programmers are the fish of
the network just like farmers feel at home on the farm;
it’s all about getting used to your environment.
So yes, there’s a whole movement of artists that have
become mutants, hybrids, and a whole other movement
that splashed around and then drowned. You’ll often see
outbursts of technical jargon from the mouths of drown
by number artists, impressively inundated in their
engineering.
Today we just happen to be going through complete
transformation into mass culture, with all the foreseeable
collateral damage.
The net is a medium, a mode. Art forms have had their
history: painting, sculpture, the net, writing, etc…. this
one is just beginning.
/// The net and reality are colliding, which just proves
their reality and their proximity. The authorities are
apprehending, after the fact, the other power that’s taken
shape beneath their feet, and are now trying to wrest
control back to themselves. The net is an absolute
democracy, in other words, it’s an anarchy, where truths
are decided by the universal suffrage of available attention
span, not according to the desires of some interest group.
The net is where people’s desires come together, freed of
the limits of time and space. Open source software
frighten industrial software producers, and virtual
mobilization can bring a government to its knees. If you’re
creative enough, you can reach the inbox of the most
powerful person in the world, your secretary has been
replaced by anti-spam software and Obama can’t use his
blackberry any more—too dangerous—too direct.
The net is no longer limited to the world of copper, and
it’s no longer just a medium, it’s making connections:
truly social, truly real connections.

been transformed into mass media, there will be a loss of
freedom, but each signal will be able to go much further.
Every part of the physical world is about to become
connected. A climactic era is coming for net art: reality
hacked via the net. Right now we’re in the period of the
hoax, which can be considered as a surrealistic art form
in and of itself, but if your medias and your means of
transportation are connected, globalized dadaist hacking
is just waiting to happen. Because art is a kind of hacking
of human perceptions, and hacking is a radical and anarchistic art form. If a truly net art form manages to break
through the background noise, that art form will necessarily be radical. It will be radical because of its duty to
embody the spirit of our times, and there’s nothing subtle
about the spirit of our times.

un amateur à qui le web a tout donné :
un travail et un réseau. Je me suis intéressé
aux formes d'art issues du média réseau,
puis j'ai moi aussi réalisé des tentatives.
La technique tue l'instinct et congèle
instantanément les émotions dans des
vapeurs électriques. Rien n'est fait pour
l'humain, il n'y a que du code, et des genres
de forçats numériques en train de pousser
les limites. Dans le flot, j'ai toujours
soigneusement évité le label "artiste"…
Alors mon parcours dans le réseau, je le
tracerai plus comme celui d'un amateur ;
celui qui aime et ne compte pas.

début, avant que ça devienne le lieu du
déluge. Le réseau est une mutation
vibrionnante continue.
D'un point de vue artistique, ce qui m'a
d'abord surpris, c'est que tout est inversement proportionnel à ce qu'il paraît: tout
ce qui s'affiche est à peine soutenable, et ce
qu'il y a de plus fort est difficilement visible
ou compréhensible. C'est difficile parce
qu'il faut avoir une culture de machine
pour voir l'enjeu de ces formes ténues et
pointues d'art en réseau. L'insoutenable,
sur le réseau, c'est l'art plastique.
Pour résumer : il y avait une minorité qui
poussait les limites, il y a aujourd'hui des
teras-unités d'artistes digitaux qui spamment leurs pédantes éjaculations en
démultiplication panoramique sur tous
les supports sociaux du web TWO point
ZERO. Nous sommes maintenant dans
le bruit de fond, la neige électronique,
il faudra bien que ça sédimente un peu.
Comprenez- moi bien : les codeurs sont
les poissons dans le réseau comme les
agriculteurs sont chez eux à la campagne;
c'est une question d'adaptation à un milieu.
Alors oui, il y a toute une mouvance
d'artistes qui a muté, qui s'est hybridée, et
toute une autre qui a barboté et souvent
s'est asphyxiée. On peut assister fréquemment à des saillies de jargon technologique
dans la bouche d'artistes qui ne sont que
des noyades en série d'impressionnistes
immergés dans l'ingénierie.
Il se trouve qu'aujourd'hui nous sommes
en pleine conversion en culture de masse,
avec tous les effets collatéraux prévisibles.
Le réseau est un média, un support.
Les formes d'art ont été une histoire :
peinture, sculpture, réseau, écriture, etc.
Celle-ci vient de débuter.

c'est la preuve de leur réalité et de leur
proximité. Le pouvoir prend conscience,
en retard, de l'autre pouvoir qui s'est tissé
sous ses pieds, d'où une volonté actuelle
de reprendre le contrôle. Le réseau est une
démocratie absolue, c’est-à-dire une anarchie,
où les vérités s'établissent au suffrage
universel du temps de cerveau disponible,
pas selon la volonté d'un groupe d'intérêt.
Le réseau est le lieu de l'union des volontés,
affranchies des distances et du temps.
Les logiciels Open-Source font peur aux
éditeurs commerciaux, et une mobilisation
virtuelle fait plier un gouvernement.
Si vous faites preuve d'inventivité, vous
pouvez atteindre directement l'inbox
du maître du monde, votre secrétaire a été
remplacée par un antispam et Obama a
perdu l'usage de son Blackberry — trop
dangereux — trop direct. Le réseau n'est
plus limité au monde du cuivre, ce n'est
plus exclusivement un média, il crée
des liens : des réseaux sociaux et biens
concrets.

Après la conversion de ce lieu élitiste en
média de masse, il y aura une perte de
liberté, mais chaque signal aura une portée
beaucoup plus importante. Chaque élément
physique est en passe de se connecter.
Une période jouissive de l'art en réseau est
à venir : le hacking de la réalité via le réseau.
Nous en sommes aux hoaxs, qui peuvent
se considérer comme une forme d'art
surréaliste à part entière, mais si vos
médias et vos moyens de déplacement
sont connectés, on peut envisager un
hacking dadaïste globalisé. Parce que l'art
est une forme de hack de la perception,
et le hack est une forme d'art radicale et
anarchiste. Si une forme artistique propre
au réseau parvient à percer le bruit de
fond, elle sera forcément radicalisée.
Elle le sera par son devoir d'incarner l'esprit
du temps, qui n'a rien de subtil
