"Artists as Hackers" panel at Eyebeam during F.A.T GOLD exhibition

"The free software and arts communities are filled with people motivated not just by money but by the act of creation and a drive to make meaningful, or at least functional, contributions to society," writes F.A.T. Lab co-founder Evan Roth in his recent essay, Artist Hacker: From Free Software to Fine Art. Inspired by the philosophy put forth by Roth, Eyebeam hosted a panel on Thursday April 4 from 7:00pm–8:30pm called "Artists as Hackers". The discussion brought toge...

Screen-based digital data collected during image inquiry

3D rendering of real objects is called “in volume”: height, width and depth. 2D geometric model projection is the plan for the physical 3D. Location in n-dimensional space. Space is Euclidean. 2D is an application itself which controls the complexity of 3D images. Cartography is a physical image manipulation technology using instruments derived from 2D projection devices. Print technology and representation in the plan - artistic and scientific - refer to 2D rendering methods. 2D image is a mapping of reality. Computer graphics. Representation and management image. Raspberry Sushi Saturdays in the Artlab

The Artlab is also a place for research and development. Our attention si currently going towards the Raspberry Pi (wikipedia link). Every month, we welcome several experienced programmers for Raspberry Sushi sessions : for an afternoon and an evening, the resources of the Artlab are available for them to try, test and search new uses of Raspberry Pi, and then to develop their first encouraging results. We will soon give more details about the achievements of these Raspberr...

[documentary] "Hello World!" first episode about Processing is a must-watch

We were impatient to discover the Ultra-Lab's documentaries Hello-World.cc about main programming tools used by digital artists, like Processing or Open Frameworks. First episode "Processing" was released a few hours ago. It gathers numerous video artworks, experts interviews and examples. Its point of view is broader than a simple technical explanation or a basic history of a programming language. In the end, every one, regardless their programming skills, can watch these...

MYO, unleash your inner Jedi

MYO is a brand new wearable gestures sensor created by Thalmic Labs.  Basically, it is a strap you wrap around your arm between your wrist and your elbow. The strap is stuffed with sensors which detect the muscles activity and the arm motions. It is said to be precise enough to detect the gestures of a single finger. Then, each gesture data are sent through Bluetooth for any kind of control, since the data work as an API. For instance, you may  control devices like a camera, a compu...

HACKERS FOR AN OPEN CULTURE - Will they save the world?

Will they save the world? It’s always difficult to redefine a trendy word, especially one that’s been so butchered by the media that we think “hacking” is bad, and that “the hacker” is a powerful bandit. My definition of “hacker”, whenever I can give it, is closer to “exalted engineer”. The first hackers, and their culture, were born in a miniature model club at MIT. They were making electric trains, very far from the image of p...

Stairway to Artlab

This week, Jason Cook's "Hall Effect" project, which improves Digitalarti stairway, became the raw material for new creations. Its lights have been matching colors to the stairway passersby for months. A person going up or down the stairs was followed by a distinct random color. The people detection and lights control system got enhanced by a radio-transmitter. The stairway data are now available on a server, easy to use for various projects : while Alex and Jason linked a giant...

An Instrument for the Sonification of Everday Things

"An Instrument for the Sonification of Everday Things" is a very basic name for a very clever and poetic piece made by Dennis P Paul. Following the classic idea of finding artistic tools and creative meanings in everyday objects, he came up with his installation he describes perfectly : "This is a serious musical instrument. It rotates everyday things, scans their surfaces, and transforms them into audible frequencies. A variety of everyday objects can be mounted into the ...

Ben Grosser fights against Facebook metrics

Facebook is metrics-centered. Everything is counted, summed. detailed metrics are available for Pages Managers and if basic members do not have this (yet ?), some feel quite disappointed if their latest status about them setting a new best time for their running course does not get a significant number of likes and comments. Ben Grosser is a clever artist and programmer from Illinois. For him, "these numbers lead me to evaluate my participation within the system from a metricated viewpoint&...

Cube in Cube, a projection by G8 Labs

Two cubes are spinning around the same axis, the big one looks empty and transparent, and contains the little one, which seems full and white. However, only the big one is full, the small one is nothing but a 3D-like projection adapted to the big one rotation and to the location of the head of the viewer (detected with a Kinect). This is just a prototype made by G8 Labs, but it looks promising. Here are other tests G8 Labs team did for their projection on a spinning cube : (a&nbs...

"Touch the train window !" by Salad

The Salad team in Japan created a poetic interactive installation for train travels. When the passenger touches the window, a object is projected in the landscape according to the area of the window which was touched. In the background or in the sky : a hot-air balloon or a plane appears. In the foreground : a person or a car appears. This works with a GPS, Kinect, and a projector, programed with openFrameworks. ...
