Agora Festival: Prototypes

Creating an intrigue shared among the laboratory, the university, the studio, and society, publicly addressing the questions that arise via artistic interventions or the scientific imagination, testing the effects of a prototype through artistic works, is to act beyond cultural boundaries.

Prototypes by Michael Jarrell meet the language of Heiner Müller, by Sarkis who reintroduces the idea of randomness lost in Roaratorio by Cage. Jonathan Harvey's prototype and dream of a talking orchestra, Gérard Pesson's theatre of lights and a "sensation keyboard", a monumental first for Tristan Murail combining an orchestra with virtual and real choruses.

The enigmatic nature that belongs to the artistic prototype, detected by Proust in Vinteuil's septet, to be an "enduring new thing".

Here is a video demo to appreciate Exomène (www.exomene.com) performing live. And what a better playground for industrial music than playing in a factory!    Exomène's approach is very physical and far away from music studio. Exomène always engages and interacts with its audience especially through the use of colorful and interactive performances controllers. Then the crowd in itself is also a performance controller : the movement...

[Review] The mechanics of time

In hindsight, it’s hard to imagine the stigma attached to electronic music, and particularly to techno at its beginnings, by the apologists of socalled “erudite” music. Beyond the generation gap that amplified this trench war, it took the authority and open-mindedness of a few rare shooting stars to build bridges between repetitive, experimental music and the mechanical beats of Detroit. In France, of course, it was Daniel Caux who incarnated this approach. The analysis of t...

ERROR SYSTEM

user
Error System is an audiovisual performance derived from an eponymous video. In April 2011, my computer has suffered a breakdown which made me lose a lot of data. To take revenge on this betrayal, I proceeded to the filmed lynching of the culprit and I shot a video art. I use this 7 and a half minutes killing film  to build an audiovisual performance lasting approximately 45 minutes. I simultaneously project four instances of the movie and I manipulate them in real time wi...

Evan Holm creates a kinetic nature

Sounds, moves and the nature are Evan Holm main inspirations. This west-coast American artist creates kinetic installations featuring salvaged objects (piano, bedroom dresser, turntables...) For Paleotone, Evan submerged a turntable in a dark and opaque liquid. he picks a vinyl from the collection he has pinned on a wall and submerges it too, on the turntable. For Evan, this stands for the unavoidable back to the dust, the vanishing humanity will experience, causing the end of all its creatio...

PHOTON makes you play with laser-strings

We already spotted Jayson Haebich for some of his former creations, which often involve laser and interaction. This Australian artist has recently presented a clever way to track somebody's moves interacting with a laser thanks to fog and a well-used Kinect. He has now turned it into a complete installation, "PHOTON", allowing the audience to play as if the lasers where the strings of an instrument. Moreover, this is not only a technical achievement but also a visual one. ...

Quintetto - A goldfish orchestra

Quintetto is an installation based on the study of casual movement of objects or living creatures used as input for the production of sounds. The basic concept is to reveal what we call "invisible concerts" of everyday life. The vertical movements of the 5 fishes in the aquarius is captured by a videocamera, that translates (through a computer software) their movements in digital sound signals.

Quintetto

Director: Quiet ensemble.

The research of  Quiet ensemble goes through the observation of the ballance between chaos and control, nature and technology, creating subjects that perfectly merges the those elements, elements that take form from the relation of organic and artificial subjects, moving the attention to insignificant and wonderful elements,

like the movement of a fly or the sound of trees.

The interest is connected to those technologies that explores the aesthetic and conceptual possibilities deriving from interactivity techniques, aproaching the newest technological discoveries

as if they would be the tools for creation, like the brush for the painter.

Working on the relation between time and space, sound and image the work of Quiet ensemble changes and develops in time, relating to the space, changing it.

Emphasizing the unespected events, refuting the apparent immobility of shapes and melting the appearing opposition of forces in nature.

Quiet ensemble is born in 2009 from the meeting between Fabio Di Salvo | Bernardo Vercelli.

[videos] Jelly, Goldfishes and Music Boxes can make sounds... or even music.

Here are three disruptive ways to produce sounds which struck our minds : these digital creators used fishes, jelly, or small musical boxes. Well, small musical boxes are not such a disruptive mean for producing sound, but the way their use is thought makes the whole piece worth the video time. Moreover, the two last videos deals with hands and fingers moves which make sounds, like with many basic instruments, whereas the first one is all about chance and not intentioned creation, a...
