The Colour of Phi

A site-specific electro-luminescent artwork which uses the concept of the Golden Ratio as a mathematical and aesthetic principle. On the horizontal plane the gallery space was divided into golden rectangles, while on the vertical axis the space was divided according to the Fibonacci numbers scale, creating a mathematical harmony of lines drawn in space with light. People could walk inside the installation for an immersive spatial experience.

Voyage

‘Voyage’ installation consists of three hundred floating paper boats, encasing coloured dynamic LED lights that come alive at night, putting on a spectacular light show.

ERROR SYSTEM

user
Error System is an audiovisual performance derived from an eponymous video. In April 2011, my computer has suffered a breakdown which made me lose a lot of data. To take revenge on this betrayal, I proceeded to the filmed lynching of the culprit and I shot a video art. I use this 7 and a half minutes killing film  to build an audiovisual performance lasting approximately 45 minutes. I simultaneously project four instances of the movie and I manipulate them in real time wi...

Portrait : SHU LEA CHEANG's interactive mythologies

From early days, Shu Lea Cheang, the Taiwanese multimedia art pioneer, has been building interactive fictions borrowing from the major themes of our time, gender, sexuality, science fiction and media. Her mythological fictions draw on intimate as much as public matters, questioning her own story whilst inviting the spectator/visitor to participate. What is mostly remembered from the multimedia artist Shu Lea Cheang is her famous and ultra-commented film, I.K.U. (picture above, see its wi...

Stairway to Artlab

This week, Jason Cook's "Hall Effect" project, which improves Digitalarti stairway, became the raw material for new creations. Its lights have been matching colors to the stairway passersby for months. A person going up or down the stairs was followed by a distinct random color. The people detection and lights control system got enhanced by a radio-transmitter. The stairway data are now available on a server, easy to use for various projects : while Alex and Jason linked a giant...

The secret wheels of Mécaniques Poétiques (Poetic mechanisms)

Les Mécaniques Poétiques, by the EZ3kiel group were finalised at the CEA's Atelier Arts Sciences in Grenoble. A fine example of technology and art work symbiosis. Presented, amongst others, in December 2010 at the Maison des Métallos as part of the Digitalement Vôtre exhibition curated by MCD, EZ3kiel's Les Mécaniques Poétiques is a series of ten installations, both high-tech and delightfully old-fashioned similar to the designées object s...

Cinématique (Kinematics): Living Visual Art…

At the edge of circus, dance and digital art, the Cinématique play by Adrien Mondot defines the principles of living visual art created by its designer. An orange mechanical hand at the Artlab entrance

The Artlab is a welcoming place: a mechanical hand covered with an orange glow waves hello or goodbye at the people entering or leaving the Artlab. It could also bless them in the name of robotics... This hand was part of the research conducted for Lulu White (Jason Cook, 2012). It works thanks to a presence detector, several servo motors and a PCB made in the Artlab....
